Default Do I need to take the starter off to pull the bellhousing?

In the Chiltons manual, it says to remove the starter, for what I assume is to remove the bellhousing/flywheel. The book however, covers 93-02's and on here no one ever mentions a need to remove the starter. Whats the deal on this, do i need to remove it or no?
