Hood wont open!!

Hood wont open!! So im really hoping I put this in the right section, but i tried to open my hood the other day and it wont open. The cable just pulls out as far as I can and the hood does nothing. It was working one day but not the next. Anybody know any secrets of how to get the hood open without having to go to a dealership? This has never happened to any of my cars so i'm a little lost here. Any help would be sweet. thanks. oh and i have a 98 Trans Am if that helps.
