Default Can you use new head gaskets to check PTV?

As stated can you use your new head gaskets while checking PTV on cylinder #1. I just don't want to crush it and then take the head back off to check PTV. I tried using my old stock gaskets to check but I'm going w/ 0.040" cometics - maybe I should just subtract the compressed thickness of the two and subtract that (around 0.015" I think) from my measured PTV clearance to see what it would actually be if the cometics were in there. For example if I measure intake at 0.080" on the old GM gaskets then I should actually be at 0.080 - 0.015 = 0.065" using the cometics right?

^If so then what do you torque them to (just the 4 bolts around cylinder #1)? I just don't want to screw the gasket up by doing this.

When I did mine I used the old gaskets and subtracted the difference. That was close enough for me since I am not running on the edge of recommended PTV.

Easier method. Take your old GM MLS gasket, remove the rivets. Remove the thin outer layer and use the remaining two pieces (one thick and one thin) you will be very very close to 0.040". Just be careful if you decide to clean them (remove the rubber) and don't use any power tools to do this.
