reverse lock-out is messed up

reverse lock-out is messed up well today when i went to back up, i couldnt get it into reverse. my reverse lock-out would not let me go through. i had to force it through. it still went into reverse just fine i just had to really force it through. all the other gears shift fine too. what could be wrong with it? please help.
