Default LS1 in 1989 3/4ton Suburban...?

Well I'm looking for some advice or feedback on an idea. We have an 89 3/4ton suburban with a 350 that just threw a rod. We've been toying around with modifying it for awhile, but now we have to do it sooner rather than later. Since the engine has to come out anyways, I started thinking about a conversion or a swap--and naturally the LS1 came to mind.

What do you guys think of this, is it even possible (without a ton of custom work?).. What kind of path should I be looking to take? Find a nice low-mileage ls1 shortblock and toss a decent matching cam/head/intake setup on it?

There is some money to play around with, but I don't want to blow a ton on this. It would be a fun project, and the truck is not quite a DD vehicle. It is just the utility vehicle, anything from driving up in the desert mountains in CA to moving **** into the new house. The better gas mileage would be a nice bonus as well.

Thanks for any help/insight!

I say go for it. Id use a ls series motor outta a truck 5.3 or 6.0 it would keep costs down. I am planning on doing the same I have a 88 burb that I swapped a sm465 granny low 4 speed in, that a 5.3 would like to see.

yea a 5.3 would even be a hella upgrade for cheap the 350 from 89 was only rated around 220 hp and a 5.3 is from 280 to 315 depending on the year model or buy you a 6.0 and a 4l80e and youd have one good tow rig i bought my 6.0 and 80e for 2400 and a 5.3 and 60e can be had for around 1500 to 2000
