Default Ideal Ratio

I have a 427 big block about 450hp, th400 in a 1955 chevy pickup pro street setup with a 9" ford rear end, with 31 x 18.5's for tires. When I bought it, it came with 2.75's in the rear, seems low to me I feel like it should have something along the lines of a 3.73 or something. Seems like the tires spin way to easy in first gear. And doesnt have a ton of pickup when you are cruising. How can i figure out what it should have?

Gears are tricky. I assume you don't daily it or drive much? What cam? What converter? With those tires you will need a 4.00 or higher to do much. Seems most with tires that size trying to make them go run 4.50's or more.

Actually a 2.75 is a HIGH gear. You would probably need around a 4.10 with those tires. But like Intercooler said, depends on what you are going to do with it.
