can't get my balancer off, any ideas?
I have the engine on a stand and I've tried heat, air impact and cheater bar on a socket. Problem is on the stand with the cheater bar it rotates and I can't lock it off.HELP!!
I'm tearing it down to the bare block so damaging seals doesn't matter.
thanx, chris.

If you put 2 long bolts into the flywheel holes into the back of the crank and insert a long screwdriver/prybar between them. Let the motor rotate until the the bar hits the stands mounting lugs. This should immobilize the crank you will need to stabilize the entire engine and stand tho. I was lucky and have the Kent Moore flywheel locking tool that bolts into the starters location but the flywheel must be installed.

I've had this same problem, in my case I had the motor sitting on a pallet with no flywheel. I took two ratchet straps and tied it down from the back of the motor, putting one strap on each side of the pallet and running them to the middle I looped each strap around one of the flywheel bolts and torqued it down until I thought the straps were going to break.
I had my doubts at first but it some how held enough for me to break the balancer bolt loose, with that out of the way it easily held for me to use the pulley puller.
on the motor that I sent the #6 rod out the block with I just stuck a pipe down the empty bore and spun the crank around until it was effectivly locked down for me to remove the crank bolt. LOL

Thanx guys. Got it!
Ended up taking some aluminum angle bar and drilling two holes to line up with the flywheel bolts and bolted the angle to the flywheel spot and rotated the motor till it bound up against the stand, 3 ft cheater bar nice and slow and wala.
Thanx again for the advice.

His problem was not with leverage to turn the bolt it was with immobilzing the crankshaft to get the bolt loose. You can have a 10 foot bar on there but the crank needs to be immobilized. I was about to post this LAME picture I made up (hey I tried) illustrating what I did. You used the same principle and I am glad you got it loose.
