How often should one change transmission fluid (t56)?
Hey, sorry if this is covered, but I can't seem to find it and I have heard anything from 20K to 100K. I just got to 36000 miles and I feel like I should be changing my tranny fluid.
How often should I change my fluid in the T56?
I baby my car 99% of the time (the other 1% is at the dragstrip), and I have no problem spending half an hour doing this. Also, how much fluid should I use and what brand (I want GOOD synthetic stuff - I don't like to cheap out on my car). Thanks!

First of all, your tranny calls for ATF Dexron III.
I use the "new" stuff, Dexron VI (upgraded version of the III, and is compliant with any tranny that calls for III)
Now, should you use Synchromesh? Well, I ahve heard of quite a few people running it...BUT, what about long term affects? No one knows. There is a thread right now, guys tranny is making noise, and he has been running Synchromesh.
Now, is it BECAUSE of the 'Mesh? I don't know. I do know the 'Mesh is thicker than ATF, and I look at it like this:
If your engine calls for 5W20, would you run 20W50 in it? Neither would I.
Now, synthetic? Well, I see no harm in it, as synthetic has proven to be a superior fluid over conventional fluids. In teh past, I never saw teh benefit in running synthetic. Now, I do.
I run Royal Purple in my Cummins, and my wife's Jeep 4.7 HO. My NV5600 calls for Synchromesh, so I run that, PLUS I run a a Lucas Synthetic additive in it as well.
Wife's tranny calls for ATF4. I run Castrol ATF4 in it.
Now, how often, T56 fluid change? Well, fluid breaks down. So, teh more often you can change it, the better off you will be. With your driving habits, I would change every 25-50K miles. If more abusive, more often.
If you hop on teh diesel websites (I own a Cummins, so i spend some time there as well) you get these guys that run this filtration setup on their motors, and they say they go 30, 40, 50K miles without changing their motor OIL!!!! Now, it may work, or it may not....but do you think if you have a motor faliure that that company you bought that filter from is gonna buy you a new motor?
My point is, frequent fluid changes can ONLY HELP, and NEVER hurt. So, if you want to run teh risk and not change fluid often, hey, go ahead and be my guest.
Me? I change oil in my truck every 7500 miles, Wife, same.
Tranny fluid, my truck every other year now (@ 25K miles)
Wife, auto tranny..once a year (@ 20-30K miles)
Diff, about the same with both.
Sorry for the long post...just got to typing and rambling
