Default oil pump driveshaft removal

had a small block built recently. well looks like the engine builder used a big block oil pump driveshaft by accident as it is too long in block when compared to a stock one.

now here is question i have the motor in car already. now my question is can you pull the oil pump driveshaft rod through top with long needle nose pliers?

or do i have to do the inevitable and pull the pan and drop oil pump?

thanks for input
