Occasional first gear issues...
The occasional problem seems to be a less than smooth engagement when releasing the clutch from a stop into first gear-all other gears seem fine. It seems to be sporadic or slightly worse when on an uphill grade. Is this a hydraulic issue?

It could very easily be a hydraulic issue, but another there is something else to check very easily. Mine was doing something similar to the point that sometimes I couldn't even put it in first. Anyhow, with the car running and in neutral push the clutch in and slowly release it. If you hear any kind of odd noise then just google diagnosing clutch problems. That should pull up a guide for the different noises you may hear that would be certain symptoms. Mine was a slight roughness (slightly like a grind/catch) as soon as i would start lifting my foot off of the clutch - pilot bearing.
Maybe someone can chime in that knows the different symptoms to help you diagnose more easily, but for now hope that helps
