Dowshifting w/ a Detroit Locker
This happened a few months ago when the car was running, but I just remembered it.
After I installed my 9" w/ Detroit Locker I went out for a test drive. While on said test drive, I downshifted coming to a red light, and the car started fish tailing, almost to the point of spinning out. I immediately pulled it out of gear and stopped with the brakes.
I know the reason behind this is the new rear, but I don't know why...anyone care to enlighten me? If it is the norm with Lockers, then I won't worry, if it's not then I have a problem.
Thanks.

I do not think that was norm, back in the '60 's I ran a locker in a '67 /427 mustang for 6-7 years strip/street for 5-7 years, last 5 years running a locker in 00 SS 7 1/2 '" street/strip with no problems of ant kind , have 9 " with locker ready to go in now

I'm betting what happened is that you downshifted and the motor was at least 2000 RPM's below what the trans speed was. With any rear diff, you'd have skidded the rear wheels for a moment. With a locker, as it engages and disengages, it makes the car feel as though the panhard bar has slop, i.e. the car shifts a bit from left to right. This added shift while you skidded the rear wheels caused you to nearly loose it. You can get a better understanding of this action while taking a cloverleaf on ramp and GENTLY applying and letting off of the gas. You'll notice the track of the rear of the car shift like the rear end is moving.
