Talk to Gene at Central FL Machine & Speed in Winter Garden. Gene has been building engines and racing for many years and is well known in Florida, he is very knowledgeable.

My friend had a blocked sleeved and motor assembled at CW Pence on 17-92 in what I believe is considered Sanford. They did a great job and were very reasonably priced. It's located next to Roger's Corvette.

I don't think this line of thinking holds true now a days, at least for a DD 400-600HP setup. Parts are now cheap and used parts are getting readily available more often. As for the machine work, I think it is too high, especially for this economy. You can have a SBC machined for a 383 for if pennies, but an LSx machining is running $2K-/+, that is insane!
What caught me off guard in pricing was Eric quote at HKE... $900- $1100 for machining and assembly... Now that is a nice realistic price! And to be honest, i was expecting WAY more from his shop since the high caliber work he does. Hats off to Erik for keeping the hobby realistic and attainable for us day to day guys! I just wish he lived here and not Texas, lol... well you can't win the all i guess
