Default Vcm making me crazy

I've got HPTuners and the other day when I tried to "read entire" my current tune half way through the down load to my laptop the read "freezes up" and the bells start going off - "low fuel, reduced power shocks inoperative, etc".
Well this has happened in the past and I learned form HPT to just abort, go to a tune and down load something to clear the bells.
When I hook up Editor and try to flash a new calabration, the VCM votage reads 0.1 volts !!!
I've cheked the battery, battery connections, the VCM fuses, the serial converter I use to get to my laptop.
Needless to say I can't communicate with the car because every time I try a non-active test write the "Gathering informaton" step fails.
Now the car won't start and I don't have any idea where to go from here.
Has anyone seen something like this ??
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
