Default heater issue

while on the move and in gear, my car has no problem getting and maintaining heating for the cabin. Once I get the car out of gear, as in idling to a light or idling at a light, the car will no longer warm the interior of the car and the engine will start overheating. Is this indicative of a heater core, bad t-stat, or something I've yet to think about? thanks yall!

Does your car have a bypass valve for the heater core? It could be something like that if your car has one.
(not sure which car has the issue)

what exactly is a bypass valve? I understand it's a valve that bypasses the heater core. How and under what conditions does it operate and fail?

I just bought a new tstat. Thats goin in as soon as the car cools. I also plan on getting the system, including heater core, flushed most likely next paycheck.

Thank you for the replies.
