Default T56-m6

I'm new to the forum and am shopping around for a 98-02 SS but will take a z28 if I can't find the SS. I'm sorta confused on the six speed transmission. Is it a T56, an M6 or are they the same trans? What's the deal? BTW, I've searched and didn't find an answer.

same thing. T56 is what kind of transmission it is. m6 is just referring to it being a Manual-6speed

The M6 is the 2.66 ratio T56 and the M12 is the 2.97 ratio.

MM6 is the GM option code for the 2.66 1st gear ratio, "M6" is just the shorthand for a Manual 6-speed as mentioned.. Just like "A4" is the shorthand for Automatic 4-speed.
