Cleaning back of SS rims?

Cleaning back of SS rims? I have the ss rims, they have groves in the back of the rims and i have tried cleaning them with a sponge but still the remain dirty, would it be ok to hit this with a wire brush or something like that? Anybody have any advice on how to do this?
