Default Changing the ring gear, advice/experience needed!

Hi, I have a 2001 Trans Am WS6, 6 speed manual, with aftermarket cam, slp headers, ls6 intake and a few other minor mods.

The previous owner had put in an open differential in the rear end. I have a torsional differential that I am going to be putting in but when I tried changing the ring gear (3.42) the guy overtightened on installation and it stripped when I tried taking it off. So now I need to buy a new ring gear, and was thinking of maybe changing the size. I was wondering, is there a 3.55 gear available or is the next size up a 3.73? If I went bigger, would I need a different size differential (the one Im putting in is same size as stock).

I figured since this is my dream car i like performance, but this is also my daily driver in the summer time and i have a long hike to work, so gas mileage is a problem. How bad would a 3.73 ruin my gas mileage in the city/ on highway, is there a huge difference? If I can get a 3.55 I would be willing to sacrafice for that but havnt found one as of yet?

Does anyone have any recomendations for brand the is a good mix between performance (quality) vs price?

Thanks!

-Josh

you can do 3:55....or 373...0r 410....my recommendation is a 373..the best all around gear.. highway.or strip[
