if you had to pick one of these headers which would you get
if you were forced to go shorties or mid lengths which ones would you pick. I live in a emission state that has a visiual and sniffer inspections. which are the best performing and fitting header available for my needs.

I just finished installing Hooker shorties on my 96. If you have a 96 or 97 with the dual cats and want to keep the cats in their stock locations, I would highly recommend ANYTHING OTHER than Hooker shorties. Search for a thread titled "Is It Even POSSIBLE To Install Hooker Shorties".

I just noticed your car is a 94, so you only have one cat. Hookers may be fine in that case. It's just the design of the shorties for the dual-cats have the pipes snaking around so much on the drivers side that just getting the bolts started is almost impossible, and the collector hits the #5 and #7 plugs. You won't have that problem with a 94 since there is room to run the drivers side tubes down further like they should be.
On the positive side, my Hookers sealed up with no leaks first time using the gaskets they supplied.

Not sure on mids... I had the BBK shorties once before I went with long tubes. They fit just fine and looked alright. I had a 96 with two cats though.
If you have the money and its even made for mids or shorties, look into getting stainless. Next time I get a new set of headers, I'm going stainless. I have a set of cermic coated long tubes that after 4-5 years started showing some rust in spots... I scraped them a few times too on the collectors which didn't help but, stainless shouldn't ever have problems as far as I know.

the pace-setter mids were a PITA to get installed. lots of beating on the primaries to get the steering shaft to fit. at the end of the day (took all weekend actually) i was not happy with performance or the aesthetics and ended up selling them 4 months later when i was irritated enough to take them back off for the long tubes i ordered. my friends BBK shorties looked great however and have considered getting those for a stock head/cammed motor over reusing the rusty stock manifolds. mac mids i hear are good so my money is on either the BBKs or MACs

i guess its down to as&m vs mac. Mac is cheaper and seems to be the best fitting midtube but only have 1 5/8 primaries which im sure is plenty. As&m ive read that are a pita to install and are like 750 bucks and there steel but there 1 3/4 primaries that ill be able to grow into

The RK Sports are the same as the AS&M Mids and are cheaper.
The 1 3/4 mids are the only way to go. I absolutely would not use a 1 5/8 header looking for any kind of power.
I have the AS&M / RKS headers on my car right now and they work awesome. They have been proven on very high hp setups as well.
That's the route I would go.

IIRC the AS&M mids are the best performing of the bunch and often get numbers very close to LTs. Unless things have changed since a few years ago when I was checking into them, then the main difference between them and your other options is that they have 1 3/4" primaries instead of the 1 5/8"
