Kinda easy one but i ll still ask.

Got a Strange 12 bolts(around 2500miles on it) and im changing(today) my gear set from 4.11 to 3.90.

Do i need to break them in with some easy driving (under 2000rpm for a couple undred miles) or i could smash the throttle after a couple of heat cycle...

Drive 20 miles, park it for an hour. Repeat maybe 2X. Drive it normal for for 500 miles meaning DO NOT BANG ON IT.

i had 4.30s that i heat cycled 10 times then started beating on them and had no problems. still looked good when i pulled them out for 3.90s

When i had gears put in my car i was told no launching on them for 500 miles but that i could drive pretty much how i wanted. When i had my 9 inch put in i was told to drive it home, about a 45 minute drive, and then let it sit overnight and it would be fine. All the work was done at Thunder Racing, so as long as there isn't any launches or hard shifts on them for a few hundred you should be alright.

I beat the **** out of my 3.90s in my 9" right when the fluid was still dripping out of the fill hole. They only slightly whine.

But yeah, for your application I would do several heat cycles as mentioned above. Easy for the first few hundred miles or so then beat that ***. Don't forget the LSA!

I was told by several people with f-bodies making way more power than me to just start beating the hell out of them. They said they never had any problems out of them either.

They need to break in. I prob did 200 miles and started beating mine. The heat generated with new gears is incredible. Heat cycle them several times and plenty of low / medium speed driving first.

It depends on the gearset, brand, and type. You can bet that if I had a limited slip, Richmonds, and a 10-bolt, I'm breaking them in the best I can. But since I have a 9", full spool, and Motive gears I opted for the beat-that-*** approach.

That's what I did when I had my 4.10's installed back in '97. I asked the installer if they needed a break in and he said no. So we backed it out of his shop and nailed it coming out Ft. Smallwood rd. Motive GM gears are what I used. Now almost 60K miles later and many 1.7x launches, they are starting to whine.

If they are set up right, have at it.

i agree, i was checking the heat of my rear end after i put it together and it got over 200 degrees in the fist 10 miles, so i did several heat and cool cycles. then just kinda babied it for 500 miles just to be safe. now the rearend runs very cool nd the gears look excellent. i was just affraid to beat on it cause i put it together myself and it was my first rearend.

ran it for 5 min on jack stands in forward and reverse. let it cool for a few hours. drove it around the block for maybe 5 min. let it cool. started blasting around full throttle. Moser set up the center section so it howls, nothing break in could do for that.

Yukon told me to drive it 20 miles, let it cool, change the fluid, then baby it for 500 miles

my 3.73s in my stock 10 bolt, soon as it came off the stand and hit the road i floored it and burned the tires few hundred feet and have had 0 problems sense heh

This is exactly what the tech guy that is doing my gear told me.A couple of 5 to 10 miles normal drive and then let it cool down.

After i could just step on it big and if the set up is right(and yes it will i wtach him doing it to learn ) there will be no issue.

I wanted to see if he was telling me the truth.

Thanks i ill probably gonna give it 5 heat cycle(normal drive) and like a 200 miles normal drive too.
