What happens when the rear goes?
So I'm trying to decide if I should just go ahead and replace the rear end now, or wait until it fails. My car is still mostly stock, but I plan to either run a swap or do a procharger build, or both who knows. Eventually I know I will need a new rear end, but does it hurt anything to just run this one down until it breaks to replace it?
If there's a good chance of breaking something else when it goes, I'll not risk it, but if all that happens is it self destructs and you need a tow, then it seems like might as well wait to actually replace a defective part. Suggestions?

I waited for mine to break and of course it did at the track. It sheared teeth off the spider gears. The car stopped for a second and free reved and the car wouldn't move then after I rolled a few feet I had power again. I realized later that day that it also cost me the low roller Assy in my built 60E which sucked. Because of all this I am now the proud owner of a MWC 9" setp which I absolutely love and a TH400 trans.

If you are going to run more power then now would be the time to upgrade BEFORE you break something. On many occasions the differential will just fail not doing any damage to the rest of the car or drivetrain, but I have seen transmission, driveshafts, and under carriges of cars severly damaged due to a differential failure. If it was me, I would not take the chance.

These cars occasionally go into the wall at dragstrips when the rear breaks. You just never know to what extent the carnage is going to be. Bob

Maybe I missed some info, but anyway my .02:
What car?
How much motor?
What tires?
What transmission?
A foot brake auto is much less likely to break axle parts than a stick or a car with a brake. A loose converter helps cushion harsh shift kits...
Lots of cars on stock tires never break the rear axle, even when the dumb *** drunk owner is really trying hard.
Or... you could have a 84 Ford Ranger with a 350 Chevy & 250 cheater plate street racing on a narrow 2 lane road & no shoulder using 28x9 ET Streets on the stock Ranger rear axle and break the ring gear in half and split the case @ 120 mph... with your girlfriend/wife riding along...
