Default LS1 Radiator question

Hey guys,

I have a 1978 Z28 I put a 2004 GTO LS1 drivetrain into with an LS1 radiator.
I recently had the LS1 radiator bust on me, and I'm strongly considering going
with a better stock radiator since these are so thin and single core.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive superior option ??
I noticed even the aftermarket LT1 radiators are all the same 1 1/4" depth now as the LS1 rad's are.

My only question I have really is WTF is this upper port connection under the
cap that has a hose that goes back to the front of the engine ??? Is this really
needed or is this something I can do without ??? If so, how can I "delete" it ??

The fitting under the radiator cap is a steam vent tube that purges air pockets and steam pockets from the cylinder heads.
If you get a radiator without the steam vent fittings, you can install a part into your upper radiator hose. See this link:

Also, attaching a fan directly to the radiator care as shown in your photograph will cause the radiator to leak.

You can also just get a tee connection and use it inline with your heater hoses. Cost is about $5 for the part. I had that originally but went back to the 4th gen radiator since I am using a factory fan setup. My lincoln Mark VIII fan setup blew my 40 amp fuse....
