Default MN12, what's this lug? Can it be removed?

Hey guys, doing a swap in my '67 chevelle. What is this lug between the two bolts shown? Can it be removed? Going to be an unsightly bulge in my new trans tunnel if not...

I can't see that I'll be using it for anything, just don't want to regret sawing it off later..

thanks,
TJ

It can be safely removed.

You can take it off with a small cut off wheel. It will not hurt anything.
