Default flexplate/starter alignment

the starter from my 97 lt1 is not engaging the teeth on my tci flexplate that is bolted to a 95 block 383 lt1. the flexplate is aligned way to far forward in the starter opening and the gear is not making it far enough forward onto the flexplate. it will turn over for a short revolution but then quickly slips off. this flexplate is on a 97 4l60e, revmax stall with the tci 153t.

has anyone had this issue with the starter alignment? is the 95 block spaced differently than the 97 i pulled this from?

seems like the starter just needs to move forward less than 3/8 of an inch... wtf!

stick the flexplate on backwards? and no, there are no variations in the block.
