What are your goals with the car? If looks are your priority, then the above statement about lowered with 18's would be my route.
For a car that handles well, then the 18's would be a good choice, and for more traction straightline, then the 17's with more sidewall would be a better bet. I kind of met in the middle, and went with 18x10.5 so i have the larger wheels for the look, and yet the width allows me to run a wider rear tire for traction. When i have the MT ET Street Radial II's on the rear though, handling is gone, but traction is greatly improved. A nice set of Kumho's or Toyo's on all 4 corners and the car would handle awesome.
