89 FB sending unit

89 FB sending unit ok so the sending unit on my bird looks like its bad. my stock gauge is pegged past full and even if i d/c the battery it still doesnt move (??) i wired an after market gauge to the sending unit and its really bouncy and im not sure if its even working. so i figure i might as well just change it. 
i cant afford 200$ this close to the holidays so im gong to just drill a hole in my tank and drop in a generic sending unit. my question is, has anyone here ever done anything like this and what kind of gauge/send. unit did you use? the resistance between the gauge and the unit has to be correct or you will get inaccurate readings. any comments will be appreciated.
