Temp gauge says engine is hot but its not?

Temp gauge says engine is hot but its not? Okay so a couple of days ago my cars temp gauge started acting up. As soon as I start the car,keep in mind its bout 25 out and its been sitting overnight, within 2 mins the temp gauge reads 260. I check under the hood and the engine is still cold, I drive around for 20 min and the engine is still not hot as if its overheating. I also have no heat. Im at a stand still. Help?
