Oil temp how hot is too hot?

Default Oil temp how hot is too hot?

Just put in a gauge for oil temp was wondering what the limit oil temp wise was on the ls1? I use Castrol Edge.

Depends on oil weight. Viscosity should be around 70 SUS. Most 30's (5W-30, 0W-30) are in the 70 SUS range from 212*-230*F.

I have 10-30 in her right now and saw 220 F after letting it idle for awhile and it was only in the 30s outside today.

My mech said that the sending unit is in an unused tap in the Ls block.

Actually 220 F is about the minimum acceptable oil operating temperature. The oil needs to stay consistently above the boilig point of water (212F) to avoid water dilution that occurs because water is an unavoidable byproduct of combustion. Naturally, you motor may spend a lot of time below 220F if you do a lot of short trip driving.

I would not worry about oil temperature unless and until it stays consistently above 250F. If that occurs, I would look first at whether the measurement is accurate since oil temperature sensors, the wiring, and the associated grounding points are often the cause of "false" high oil temperatures.

220* is fine. Use lighter than 10W to reduce start up wear. 0W-30, 0W-40 are best. To save $ use 5W-30. Bobistheoilguy is the "only" place to received competent oil information. Go there for best responses. You will find that oil is typically 20*-30*F warmer than coolant temps unless driving during sustained high RPM's.

Like I said, 70 SUS viscosity is the number used for street designed engines. Match your oil viscosity to engine operating temps. For example: Road course temps without an oil cooler can reach 250*-300*F of which is why some road course drivers use 15W-50 while on a road course. 15W-50 is 70 SUS beginning @ 250*F.

Also, if your sending unit is near a header, it will send false high temps. If close to a header, wrap the sender in heat wrap.
