Default 700R or 4L60 to a LM7 5.3L

With a tight budget in mind is it worth it to skip on the 4L60 and go with the budget friendly 700R. Car is a 57 Chevy that will spend most of its life cruising

are you talking about a 4l60e or just a 4l60? if its the "e" then ofcourse ul need wiring harness etc for the trans and a computer to control it, unless uve modded a stock harness in which case it will already have the plugs and stuff in it for the trans. 700's are more or less the same trans although you have to run the TV cable, not sure if anybody out there is making an adapter to hook the Tv to the stock throttlebody, were you planning on buying new or finding a junker and getting it rebuilt? a 4l60e would probably be easier to find at a wreckers than a 700 as there getting a little older. I would go for the 4l60e, nice to be able to easily change shift points etc just by tuning the pcm, also a 700 will require the crank spacer adapter and a late model 4l60e would not, as long as its late 90's or newer.

Only 4L60E's that came behind Gen III / IV engines will not need a spacer. Any 4L60E originally mated to a V6 or Gen I / II engine will require the spacer. If you are going 4L60E you need one that is newer than 1996 for the PCM to control the torque converter. These are easily identified by PWM on the front pump as circled in the top picture below. The newest variants are the easiest to spot because they have six bolts on the tail housing. This transmission has the six bolt tail housing and came from a 1997 truck with a 350 so I needed the spacer.

In my opinion... I will never build another full street car without overdrive. You never know when a power tour or something similar comes around and you get the bug to participate. YMMV

Thats what i was trying to get at, your explanation was better tho, i put an overdrive in my 62 half ton and never regretted it.
