Default Question - can you block off the heater hoses....???

My volvo shuts off the water flow when you're not call ing for heat. The GTO donor had some kind of 4-way valve that must have recirculation.

Can I just hook up the heater hoses like they were in the Volvo and not cause some knd of hot spot or something?

I've read here and a article from Westech Dyno that it (blocking it off) should not be done. The preferred method is looping it. I am not sure how to do this when your Volvo valve closes.

Someone should chime in shortly with a more definite answer

T off an electric bypass valve with a pressure switch that will loop it back once the volvo closes its valve.

yes as long as the coolant can circulate with the valve closed.

Yes, nothing bad will happen. I have a Vintage Air setup in my Mav and it's stepper motor completely closes off any coolant circulation with no ill effects....

i use a ford ranger vac operated valve from the late 80's. It cost $12 new. I can get the Part number if you need it.

..and it shuts the flow off without a bypass when you're not calling for heat?

Sorry, i was on my phone.. not enough detail. When you shut off heat, it bypassess so no coolant goes to the heater core, but still flows in loop back to the engine.

You can block them off. It won't hurt a thing. They don't have to be looped. A lot of 80's gm cars have a water valve in the heater hose that blocks off water flow when the heater is off and the don't overheat everytime the heater is turned off. That shows that you can block them without any problems.

I also have a Vintage Air set up in my '34 Ford with LS2 engine which shuts it off. I haven't noticed any problems.

The guys building the Factory Five GTM have been dealing with this. The Vintage Air system is used in those cars. The general conclusion seems to be that it needs to circulate for proper cooling and they have come up with a valve that will allow circulation when the heater is off. Check the GTM forum for details.
