Default nova & 4l65e shift linkage

I have a 4l65e in a 72 Nova. I have the nova floor shift linkage. The guy helping me originaly cut and re-welded this lever straight. It still kind of hit park/neutral switch. Shiftworks has these that were bent the wrong way and without the 2 ears. Do I need those ears for anything? I think It will work and miss the switch if it bent the other way. I did not take off the shift linkage so I don't know what those were for.
Thanks

They may have been there to attach a rod thru, that would operate a column lock.
If the locking device is not used, then I'd just cut them off.
