Gonna swap out the converter. need advice
I have longtubes on my 98 Z . Do I absolutely have to remove the headers? The reason I'm asking is becaused my headers are welded on to the Y pipe and its a custom setup. I really dont wanna cut them for the TC swap what do you guys think.I'm capable of a tranny swap but always unbolted the exhaust before hand .

Its ALL welded from front to back. The only thing not welded are the headers to the heads lol. I crawled under today and it looks as if they will clear by a few mm . The headers seem to spread out after they bend under the floor pan . let me see if I can take some pics

i would cut it just so i could weld in the peices to bolt it back together and check all the welds while its off the car. chances are if they fully welded it while it was on the car there are leaks i cant see how there is enough clearence to get a proper weld all the way around the pipe with it on the car

Wen I was going through the process of dropping trans I saw that its without a doubt a pita to try and do it with y pipe there so I took it down. If I didnt have a choice (if welded like yours) I may have found a way to do it. But damn, idk if it would have been possible, I did mine with car off ground maybe 25" and on my back lol.
Sorry but I think its gotta come down.

I suggest cut just behind the y, go the parts house and buy a connecter pipe ( one end large enough to fit over and one end small enough to go into your I pipe) and 2 band clamps you may repair it with out a connecter peice only with a single band clamp

I've had my tranny in and out like 5 times now and haven't touched the headers/y/or I pipe. All I did was drop it off the hangers in the back and unbolt the panhard bar to drop the exhaust, which drops the tranny down.
