Default 5.3?or a 4.8
How can I know if im buying a 5.3 if I don't have the vin#? All iv got is the engine an the computer

at the back of the engine is should say 5.3 somewhere on the back of the block

Pull a spark plug, and peek in with the piston at TDC and a flashlight. 5.3 pistons will have a slight dish, 4.8 are flat tops. Could be hard to tell if there's a ton of carbon buildup though.

the rear of the block will have 5.3 ans 4.8 on it so you cant tell that way
