I had an LS1 that put out 485 RWHP, it snapped my drive shaft in half, but it never destroyed the rear end, I did take it easy on the rear as much as i could though.
I blew the LS1 up and swapped in a 416 stroker LS3 and the rear end was done immediately after i broke the engine in, I blew the Dif into many little pieces.
My advice and I'm sure others will concur, is don't spend a dime "upgrading" your stock rear, save that money for when the time comes that you need a 9", 12 bolt, or S60.
It's really a coin toss, autos are easier on the rear than manuals, if your running drag radials or regular tires, gear ratio, power level, and how you drive it. There is no set horsepower number when the old 10 bolt is gonna commit suicide.
