you guys got any secrets on cleaning it? i tried mothers but it buffs the engine turning right off. i was thinking maybe toothpaste and warm water with light scrubbing just to get the years of gunk and oxidation off. whatcha think?

Not quite sure what you are referring to. What part, exactly, are you talking about? Aluminum? Plastic?

Its the aluminum piece that surrounds the gauges, it has as engine turned finish and if you use mothers or polish it ruins the finish. All the T/A s of this era have it, its around the shifter too...

Try a scotchbrite pad + soap and water. That should keep the "brushed" aluminum finish.

In lieu of messing that cool old part up I would try a 1st/2nd gen forum other than this one. IMHO, this forum is made up mostly of 3rd & 4th gen owners which of course do not have any engine turn finish parts in them, I wish we did, that is so cool.
