Issue with 2nd gear...
Noticed last weekend that while in the parking lot I had the car in 2nd (left it that way when I parked) and when I went to shift, it was in Neutral.
Kind of a WTF moment, I put it back in 2nd and watched as it slowly moved itself out of gear and back into Neutral.
Thinking back a few days, it explained why when pulling out of the parking I could've sworn I put it in gear and then as I gave it gas, I was free-revving.
So it seems 2nd gear likes to move itself out, but only sometimes. If I leave my hand on the shifter it doesn't fight with me, it stays in place. It doesn't pop out of gear once I start accelerating either, only if the clutch is still in.
Thoughts on what it could be?

It's either not fully engaging (shift fork pads, shifter stop, shifter cup) or it's not being held in place (synchro keys/springs).
If you don't find anything by inspecting any shifter stops and shifter offset lever cup, it's time to open up the trans and see for sure.

Where should I start looking first and what am I looking for?

Probably worn fork pads but could also be something like a tapered slider and gear too. Basically the only way to determine what is wrong with it is to open it up and have a look. Thats going to require it to be removed and disassembled completely.

Bah. More money.
Is this something that is time sensitive? There isn't grinding (gotta find some wood to knock on since now it'll probably start grinding today) at any point.
I guess what I'm saying is, in it's current condition, is it hurting anything or is it just more of an inconvenience kind of thing?

If the pads are worn, eventually its going to wear out the actual fork itself and could lead to other issues with 2nd gear because it will no longer be applied far enough into gear which will lead to damaging the gear and slider.

If neither of these pan out, then you're in for a rebuild..

Cheapest/easiest things would be to pull the shifter off and inspect the small cup in the offset lever where the shifter "ball" engages the lever. Also, if you have an aftermarket shifter, check and make sure any stop screws are backed all the way out or just remove them completely.

What would be wrong with the cup? Would it be broken?

The cup could be worn or damaged. I doubt that is the issue but its worth a look. I would double check the adjustment of the stops on the shifter if they are present to make sure its not that. I don't remember if that shifter has stops on it or not.

It's actually the Hurst 391-5063 model (I have a 5-speed) but yea, same adjustment points.
