Anyone use a 6l80e from a g8 ?
I want to use a 6l80e behind a 6.0 but I want to know if it has it's own computer and harness, if I buy a tray from a wrecker whats all that's needed to make this thing work

The 6L transmissions have their computer embedded in the valve body assembly inside the oil pan. These transmissions only work with 08 and later CAN communication bus ECM's. I have one in a 67 Chevelle, and am very happy with it. I know of no way to use them on earlier model engines. The transmission computer parameters are fully accessible with most tuning packages through the OBDII port. The other downside to these transmissions is that they are HUGE! Most older cars will require substantial sheetmetal surgery to make them fit.

Thanks John for the info,I'll talk to my tuner about what you said and decide if it won't be easier just to by a complete g8 donor car. Any idea how strong the 6l80e is. This could turn into a big waste of time if it can't handle 500 horse.

I've done some looking around, not finding alot of good info on 6L-80E's. Since it has "80" in the name code, 500 hp should be well within what that trans should be able to handle. Real world data to back that up is hard to find. You may be pioneering if you go this route.

My G8 drive train is putting out about 520 HP in my Chevelle, and I have had no problems. The CTS V used the 6L90E trans with about 560 HP, So I would guess that GM figured that the safe threshold of the 80 trans was lower than that. The 90 trans is almost exactly the same dimensions, except the pan hangs lower in the chassis.

That sounds right. #'s like 60, 80 and so on represent a load value they are rated to take if I remember right. So a full-size work truck or a light high hp car, they higher the # the better off you are.
