67 Camaro Tranny Swap, have questions.
Hey guy's, a few months ago I bought a 67 Camaro. I love the car, however im not sure which gears are in it. It a 3 speed with a turbo 400 and getting on the freeway is a nightmare. Around town it's fine and I don't mind at all, but getting on the freeway is a pain. I have to be at 4-4500 rpm to barely keep up with traffic. Instead of changing out the gears im kinda leaning towards swapping out the tranny. I was thinking about going with a 700r4. I was quoted $2500 for a built tranny and labor by a shop that works on older cars all the time. IMO that's not too bad for the tranny etc, but what is involved in swapping to the 700r4? I have access to a lift and could probably easily do it myself (well with my friend) but I was just curious what additional parts I would need? You guy's think it's a good idea or should I keep what I have and swap out the gears? I've never swapped gears but I can't imagine it's that difficult. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Great looking car! My 69 had 373 gears, one of my first mods was a 700r4. World of difference. Drive shaft has to be shortened, crossmember needs to be moved, and the tv cable needs to adjusted properly or you can burn the trans up. I think I paid about 1,250 about 6-7 yrs, ago. For the trans. and install. I think I would find out what gears are in the car first. If it's just a driver stick some 308s in it. Good luck

Thanks! Forgot about the driveshaft but that's no biggie. Yea it's just a cruiser I'm not looking to be racing anyone. $1250 is a killer deal. Lol I would do it in a heartbeat for that price.
