Default trouble w/carfax...odo. rollback possible?

Im looking to buy a 02 ss,and have found a 35th le at a chevy dealership. The dealer lists the car with 6109 miles,ttops,a4,borla catback, wings west wtype kit,and urethane paint matched grille with tinted windows.the rest is unmolested, apparently some kid owned it.the dealer wants 25k for it,and im highly interested in making a deal, but have found a problem....now to the point....

i ran the carfax on the vin and it showed the mileage to be 56,500 and i flipped out.i called the dealer after speaking extensively with him about the car,and he said that dmv made a mistake when issuing the title to the dealership.is it possible that the odometer was rolled back,or their lying?what you guys think?

in 5 records that carfax shows, the odometer reading is only listed twice.the second record shows the odometer at 43,and the 5th record shows it at 56,500.....i dont know what to think, carfax also shows the warranty is expired....

It is possible all that has to be done is the instrument cluster replaced & vioa new milage.
I dont know kinda fishy, since the carfax report shows a history of increasing milage.
If you know someone at a GM dealer have them look up the service records for the VIN.
That should give you some milage infomation.

What was the 5th record from? It "could" have been an accident, if it was really 5650 miles and some asswipe accidently hit the '0' twice, ehile typing it in. I'm not sure who you would have to talk to figure that one out.

I'd use it as grounds for lowering the price.. Be sure to bring in a printout..

i spoke to the manager at the dealership, and he said the same, someone at dmv hit the last digit twice.i told him i was concerned about this, and he said not to worry he has all the documentation.im not sure what to do here, its a great deal and i dont wanna let it go.i tried haggling the price down, but they know what they have and wont budge (bastads)....maybe im just being paranoid here?i never imagined a dealership risking getting sued like that....

honestly, i would never buy a car that i thought a kid owned. i'm 17 and saying this!!!! i've seen how kids around my school treat there sports cars and it just makes me cringe. i've done a burnout or two but thats about it.... they do em every other day. My personal call to you is to move on and fine something that looks to be adult driven. i rather have 45,000 adult miles than 5,500 kid miles

Don't believe everything your read over the inter-net. I would check out the car real closely. At 6,000 miles the tires should look practically brand new, but with 50K you'd have a different story. What about the undercarraige? With only 6,000 miles it should be clean enough to eat off of, but with over 50K you'd most likely have quite a bit of road grime under the car. I'd inspect the keys, foot pedals, etc for excessive wear.

Most importantly, if you decide to purchase the car, get an odometer statement in writing from the dealer, and be sure to place the mileage figure on the contract.

Good luck

makes a ton of sense,i called slp's firehawk/ss dept and they told me the same.
ramairstyle, your correct too.but at 6109 miles (if its true) i wouldnt think there was much room to mistreat the car,and at any rate the warranty is still in effect....im gonna have to go there, but if i go for nothing, their not going to be happy to see a postal new yorker on their hands.....
thanks zigzag,im gonna check for those exact things, thatll let me know more or less,im also gonna test him by making him get the correct title from dmv,if he hesitates or refuses, ill know for sure.

Sometimes carfax can be wrong. I have a friend that wrecked his car 4 times and carfax dosent show it has been wrecked. Im pretty sure somebody just punched in an extra zero when typing. I got my SS in Dixion Tennessee (right outside of nashville) it had 11,952 miles on it. They were askin like 24,000 but i traded in my 01 v6 camaro, they gave me almost 12,000 for it which was a great deal. The difference between the two cars was like 11,000. I think I got a very great deal on my SS.

get the service records from the dealer, don't get the salesman to get them, get the vin, and go to service, and ask for the records.

What was the date of the 56K carfax report?

its possible its a legit mistake, but i would search the car extra careful, also ask the salesman, to get service to read the BCM and show you the actual milage, (i believe this can be done with a tech-2, but im not sure)

The same thing happened at our dealership. The mileage was entered into the computers wrong. It was being posted as 50,xxx some when it was actually less than that. It wasn't an odometer rollback, but just numbers entered into the computer about the car incorrectly.

im gonna post the report....
the BCM is the body control module, the second place that the odometer should be recorded at.

how long has that car been on the lot?

That seems fishy that it was a couple of months ago. But a trip to the service department, and a report of all warranty work/oil changes, ect. Should be some kind of record to see if it was possible to put 54,000 miles on it, in 2 years, not impossible, but in 14 months, 54K, thats a lot of driving...
