Stock PCM vs aftermarket such BS3 and FAST and AEM
I've been doing alot of research but figured I'd come here and ask since most tuners hang here. I see alot of guys with FI setups going crazy fast and making gobs of power on the stock PCM. Then I look into some builds and see guys running aftermarket setup such as what I have stated above and going stupid fast.
My question is what would be the reason to switch over to an aftermarket fuel management system when the stock system is able to run fast and control the needs of the engine? I see guys throwing on 3 bar MAP sensors and rolling with it. What is the limiting factor of the stock PCM? Let's discuss.

most limiting factors of stock pcm...
no WOT fuel correction
lack of ability to go past 8000 rpm on some pcms
no built in safety switches and no way to shut off the car automatically when there is a serious problem..
stock pcm is slow to process data from sensors
stock iat correction sucks and is not able to be fixed to an accurate correction.
no built in 2 step
rev limiter is slow
trans control is based on all other tables in the tune instead of being completely independent like it should be...
do you need more reasons that the stock pcm sucks?

If you need to run more than 30psi boost, or if you need more than 8 injectors.
Those are the only 2 reasons I would personally switch from a stock PCM with custom OS.

there are a lot more reasons than that to switch to an aftermarket ECU...
Just the Closed Loop Fueling at WOT is reason enough.
Local shop with a Land Speed record setting Truck has one in vehicle...
had a problem, and the Holley Unit Saved a $30,000 engine by correcting at WOT....
Stock pcm wont save jack **** for you...

There aren't any more reasons for me.
Even on systems that have it, I don't use closed loop fueling at WOT and you can still lose an engine to a lean condition even if you do.
I've tuned many, many 8 second cars with a stock PCM and they are just as consistent and reliable as those I've tuned with aftermarket engine management so I am staying with my initial post, based on my experience.

I appreciate the info you guys have given. At this time the engine we are using wouldn't warrant a changeover to an aftermarket ECU. The next build will be more for that
As far as trans controls most cars I fool with don't have computer controlled transmissions. My car however, I am thinking about putting in a 4l80e so I would want to be able to have better control of my trans.

2 options, Change the Trans Segment in the Stock PCM, or go aftermarket...
the Holley EFI Dominator will control a 4l60 or a 4l80
I prefer a completely seperate stand alone trans controller...
with my TCI 6x, I use this one http://www.powertraincontrolsolution...anscontrol.php
the one I have is actually red and branded with a TCI Logo....but it is this exact piece, and has TCM-2000 on the sticker on it..LOL
