The estimated price for a ring and pinion installation in my city is about $400 if you can find someone who will install used parts. And that doesn't include shop supplies, fluids, and gasket kit with crush sleeve.
So it's perhaps best for some of us to find a complete rearend rather than to install used parts into a used rear end. Used 4 channel rear ends in this area sell for around $350.
Since most of us agree that the 10 bolt is suspect for breakage anyway, it's costly to install used parts and have to pay for labor as I would not knowing if it will whine and howl after the installation. In addition, since the parts are used, it's doubtful the installer will guarantee no noise.
I made the silly mistake of throwing my stock 3.23 ring and pinion away thinking I would never use it again. Now 8 years later I'm going back to stock. Wish I would have kept it.
It doesn't take a lot of storage space.

It's not a bad price and if I could do all of the installation and setup myself I would be a buyer. But I am not.

Next your going to say it costs $100 to change oil or something where you live.. lol

$400???? lmao dude wtf. You can change your own rear end gears for nothing, it's like... a hour job taking your time. If you install correctly, and use good gear oil, no matter what the gears are they won't whine. I had used 4.10's put in my car that had like 40k miles on them. STILL are in the car and are perfectly fine today. If it costs you $400 to find someone to install gears, you seriously need to find a new place to go to.

I doubt I would be able to put the car on jack stands, remove the wheels, remove the rotors, remove the e brake, drain the oil from the rear end, remove the back cover, remove the drive shaft, remove the carrier, install all new bearings including axle bearings, install the ring gear and pinion, adjust everything, put and then put it all back together , fill it with lube, put it back down on the ground and then test drive in an hour. And if I could I don't have all of the tools to adjust the pinion etc.
If you or others are able to do that in an hour - then that is great and I applaud you for your knowledge and technical skills. But not all of us have the tools or skills to do some mechanical work and so we have to pay what the going rate is whether we like it or not.
I was able to find a person who works out of his garage at about 1/2 of that rate. I think I am getting a good deal.
Btw, I just removed the axles from my 12 bolt in order to get the backing plates and reluctor rings. It took me about an hour and half. If I would have know how easy it is to remove the e brake on either side I probably could have knocked a half hour off - list of things to do - put on jack stands, remove wheels, remove rotors, remove e brake, remove bolts for backing plate, pull the axles.

I'm talking a hour for the actual job. Not the time it takes to jack the car up and get ready to do the work. If your going to count the time it takes to jack the car up, take the wheels off, all that stuff to get READY to do the actual work, then it's like a 2-3 hour job. The actual WORK involved once you are under the car and ready to take the cover off is like a hour.
