On my car, if you lift up and down on the steering wheel there is about 1/2-3/4" of up an down travel on the steering wheel. The slop is for sure in the Locking part of Tilt Steering Column.
My question are there any servicing parts available to rebuild the locking assy or I am off to get a replacement column.
I dont know the history of this car but there does not appear to be any "Real Crash" damage on the car.

same problem on mine. failed a state inspection.
took it to the dealer, there is an assembly inside the column which comes apart due to a lack of locking mechanism or use of loctite on the bolts.
problem is, its a $1k repair.

Tony,
Do you have a more specific description of what part came apart along with the parts required to fix it? My guess is the $1000 was for the dealer to do the repair, correct?

Good lord they are giving it to you dry.
Its not a hard procedure after you have done it a few times. Most people with just replace the column. You have to tear the steering column down to the tilt asm and tighten up the 4 male torx screws along with some loctite.

Do you have to remove the column or can it be done in car?
Thanks,

It can be done in the car. There is a special tool needed to pull the pins out to get to the tilt. I bought one from Snap-On years ago, but had made my own before that.

yes they are right. I just got done rebuilding mine in my 2000 ss. Mine was alot worse. I used all the parts out of a good 88 chevy truck. Pretty much the same. But just some slack, that is going to be from the torx bolts loosing up.

I believe there are three bolts. One you can't get to unless you pull the top part of the tilt off which is a bitch. Put blue loctite on the two you can get to.
