Ticking after head/cam swap... longer pushrods?
Just installed new milled 799 heads and a new baby 212/212 0.561/0.561 114LSA cam on my 5.3L. The valvetrain noise is a bit excessive IMO. It's audible from the drivers seat while driving. Sounds almost like an exhaust leak but I felt around and found nada. The frequency of the tick is about half of the engine speed, which I believe means it's valvetrain related? Or could this still be an exhaust leak?
I've put about 50 miles on it and it hasn't gotten any quieter. I am using used LS7 lifters with about 30k on them (they were in my engine this whole time w/o odd noises) and new 7.325" pushrods. The heads were milled 0.022". I measured the pushrod length and got 7.250" at zero lash, so I have 0.075" of lifter preload which seems perfect.
I also have some 7.350" pushrods I could try which would get me 0.100" of lifter preload. Would there be any downside to using these? This seems a bit on the high end for preload. The rockers are stock with the Comp trunion kit. Valve springs are Brian Tooley duals. I'm going to pull the covers off soon and inspect and could put in the longer pushrods.
I'm using Mobil 1 10W30 oil. Warm idle pressure is around 50psi and 80psi near redline. Would it be worth it to try a 10W40?
