5.3 turbo build in a 71 Firebird
Hello all,
I am in the process of swapping in a LM7 into my 71 Firebird.
I am wanting to put a turbo on it as well.
My question is do I leave the stock cam and valve springs in or I have seen people use the LS6 ones?
Also the motor I got was basically free and did not include a harness/PCM. I plan on using a 4L60E for the transmission.
Do I need a certain year PCM, Harness and trans module?
Also if you guys have any more suggestions that would be great! I have read many awesome builds on here already.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hey Aaron,
Many people will change the cam (and springs) while the engine is out. The LS6 cam specs are:
Year Duration Lift LSA
2001 - 204/211 .525/.525 116 lsa
2002-2004 - 204/218 .555/.551 117.5 lsa
Its a good "cheap" upgrade. BUT, consider spending a little more and getting a bigger turbo cam or a custom grind. If you go with the LS6 cam, try to get one that's from a 2002-2004, if possible. More lift, more exhaust duration, and wider lobe separation.
I'm in the same boat as you. I've got a 72 Camaro that's getting an LM7. Still working out the details (motor mounts, etc). Will eventually be getting a front mount turbo. Hard part is, I'm keeping AC, so I have a little extra work figuring out how to mount everything.
