Possibily the bearings going bad in the AC compressor clutch assembly.

so the noise comes and goes as the a/c cycles on and off? i'd try cleaning the belt first. i usually just take a wire brush to it while it's running to clean all the crap off the ribs and see if that helps. if not then start narrowing down what pulley it's coming from. the a/c compressor adds a load to the whole belt system so it could be coming from any of the idler pulleys, the tensioner, or other accessories on the belt.
i haven't paid any attention to the belt setup on my car...is the a/c belt separate or is all run off one belt?
