Question Found a set of LQ9 heads and have some questions.

Found a set of ported 317 LQ9 heads on craigslist, and i was pretty interested, but i have some concerns. My plans with this car are to do a H/C dd. I'm really only looking to do 400+ish hp on the car. My question is, I want to go with a Thunder Racing 230/224 111 LSA cam, would these heads pair well with it? I'm gonna be buying an LS6 intake and ported TB from the same guy so i figure while I'm there I might as well pick up the heads too if they match up with my plans. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Endrance

Who ported the heads? Buying used ported heads is a big gamble. It's very easy for someone to grab a die grinder and start hacking away...and it's even easier to make a set of heads flow worse than stock if they don't know what their doing.

That being said, 317's are the same as 243's but with a larger chamber. So your compression will suffer unless you have them milled.

That raises another question...have they already been milled? If so, how much?

If they were done by a reputable head porter, and the guy can back that up with paper work/flow numbers, they might be worth it. If not, I'd pass.

If everything checks out, see if the guy will let you take them to a shop to have them checked out and cc'd to see what size the chamber is. Then figure your compression ratio out and decide if they will work.

Of course, all this is also dependant on the price.

I would definitely get as much information as you can, but 317 will need to be milled a bit to get the compression back up to what you had stock.
