Default Considering a ls swap, which motor to go with and why?

I was gonna build a 408 windsor for my foxbody, but got to thinking how much i would have to invest in it and how streetable it would be, then thought of doing the ls swap. I know there are alot of ls engines making 400 plus wheel and still be very streetable. But I'm not sure what motor and ls heads to go with.

Its still gonna be driven on the street, so i dont wanna get to crazy with it. want around 450rwhp na. But will be sprayin a 150 shot. I wanna set it up for more roll style racing. I've got a tremec tko 500 trans, but will need bellhousing, clutch ect ect I'm sure.

My question is should i go with a 5.3 or a 6.0 or anything else you suggest. I'm new to the ls world so dont know alot about em. Thanks in advance.

If your going na go with lq9 or lq4 6l.mild cam like a 224 and ported 243 heads with a good intake.probly wont make 450rwhp but it will have very good manners and good torque and be a responsive setup. Bigger gam is gonna be needed for more power tho for sure.

It depends on if weight is a factor. 5.3's are iron blocks, and some 6.0's (truck) are iron blocks. I personally have battled this question for 2 months now, and finally pulled the trigger on just a straight 5.7 alum. ls1 out of a vette. Best find would be one out of an 01' or 02' Camaro or Firebird. They come with the 243 heads and LS6 intake. I think 345 HP at that point. Go with a cam with around 600 lift, reinforce the bottom and top end, and you should be at 400+. If you dont mind an iron block get a 6.0 from an 03'+ truck with the L92 heads Cast #823, (from an Escalade), and if I'm not mistaken the LS6 intake is on the Escalade also, just the truck version. You can set that up for some major horsepower later on if you want. Depending on the cam, it's easy to get 500 out of them. You can get the 6.0 iron cheap. They also make it in alum., but they are expensive. You can also have the 5.3 bored to a 5.7 and you basically with have an Lt1 block set up like an LS1. Those are cheap also.

L92/LS3 etc heads are rectangular port, so no ls6 intake. 5.3s are solid but cheap enough to be disposable, you could start there and slap a turbo on it.

Slight correction since he said he was new: 5.3's are available aluminum and iron block. I believe L33 and LM7 are both aluminum. Most truck 6.0s are iron block (LQ4, LQ9) and all car 6.0s are aluminum (LS2, etc etc).

If you're going to be sprayin, you should go with iron. For the price difference, I'd go with the 6.0. There is unlimited potential with it. "Theres no replacement for displacement" as they say. As I said before, if weights not really a factor, go with a bored 6.0 iron 03+ model with L92 Heads. I've seen alot of ads for brand new set of L92's for $550 from a place here in Texas.

"Early LS engine trucks were equipped with the LQ4 and LQ9 iron-block engine with a standard bore of 4.000 inches and stroke of 4.000 inches (382 ci). Bored to 4.030 in with the 4.000 stroke, you get 408 ci. The 6.0 liter block weighs 180 lbs, while the ls1 block weighs 87 lbs. All ls1 parts carry over except for windage tray and oil-can pickup."
***Just a snip-it I found in CHP

In the S-10 swap I'm doing now, I'm going with an 01' vette motor, should be here today. It's going to be a daily driver. Stock 241 heads, typical Hotcam with LS6 springs, hardened rods, and new lifters. All fresh GM parts. I'm not trying to make over 400hp because that's enough for everyday drivin. If it has the LS6 intake on it, we're just gonna roll with it. Getting the block and heads reworked, as far as bearings and seals go. I'm just hoping I didn't buy a motor that was owned by a lead foot. Guess I'll find out soon enough. I'v'e started a thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...03-s-10-a.html
