Default Power steering random cut out, low speed and intermittent

Trying to get some ideas of what could be the culprit.

The PS pump would whine slightly for a minute after start up back in december for a couple weeks. It stopped, shortly after that I started experience the PS cut out at speeds >15mph. It happens randomly, and will immediately start working after turning the wheel another few degrees. Its pretty sporadic, happens maybe once a week or every 2 weeks.

Pump has been silent for a few months, fluid is good, no leaks. Does the pump have a filter that could possibly get clogged?

I'm planning on doing an autox next week, and it would be kind of inconvenient for it to happen while doing a run

Time for a rebuild.

The pump has a pressure relief valve to bleed off excess pressure. If it gets gummed up and sticks open, it will bleed off all the pressure and leave you with no help on the steering.

Ah well thats good news isn't it. Can this be serviced out of curiosity? Never messed with a PS pump before, not looking forward to it on the LT1 lol.

It can be serviced, but I don't know where you'd get the parts and you'd probably have to take the pump off. At that point, you might as well go for a rebuild or a new pump.

I completely agree, at that point just put a new pump on and save time on doing the rebuild.
