Default Spark plug question

Ok I'm gonna be installling some LT's and true duals soon and figure ill do plugs and wires while I'm at it, my question is are the NGK plugs any good? I'm mainly concerned bc of the huge price difference between them and the iridium acdelco plugs, 65 bucks for all 8 iridium compared to 20 for 8 of the NGK. And if the NGK's are the way to go which ones? Tr55 tr6 or tr7 what's the difference.

The $20 NGK plugs are copper, and therefore only good for 30k miles. That is why they are so much cheaper. The Iridium plugs are generally good for 60k miles or more.

TR-55 are a stock plug equivilent, TR6 are used if you are using nitrous.

I use NGK TR-55s in my bolt on car.

I use MSD wires... no problems here.

The NGK plugs are supposed to come pre gapped at .059 per NGK... but anywhere in the .050-.060 range should be ok. You should be able to put them right in out of the box, but I would check to be sure before u throw them in.

I use NGK TR51X and they are pregapped from the factory. I researched plugs for a while before I bought them, but sorry I can't remember why I chose the TR51X's over the TR55's but I think was the factory gap, It was recommended at the time.
I use MSD Wires with Pacesetter long tubes. No problems.

Just ran on a Mustang dyno with Cam only / stock heads / cutouts open and hit 385rwhp. Sounded like a jet plane engine and was smooth through the entire curve.

The NGK website recommends Iridium IX, TR51X stock no. 7397 for LS1's. That may be how I decided on which plug to buy. When I bought my car used, first thing I did was replace plugs since I had no idea of age, pulled out the V power NGK R's and put in Iridium TR51X's. It's their top shelf plug.

NO.

Also, I don't know many people that only change plugs once every 30K miles.

I change mine every other oil change. I change oil every 1500ish miles.

When I'm spraying they get changed extremely often.

For a stock/bolt-on daily driver, I wouldn't even think about pulling out iridiums at 60k. I left the stock platinums in my '02 for 100k miles and they came out looking great, and there were no significant improvements after installing the new wires and plugs. Based on this, I would let the iridiums go for at least 100k in my application. But keep in mind, this is a stock (lid/catback) car that is used as a daily driver.

I agree that the conventional tipped TR55s should be good for up to 30k miles in most mild street applications.

There is certainly nothing wrong with changing plugs more often, but for a stock car where you aren't looking to squeeze out every last ounce of horsepower, there is really no benefit to changing plugs far ahead of schedule. Considering the marginal improvements I saw replacing mine at 100k, I imagine there would have been no difference at all had I replaced them at 50k.

I can't leave things alone though! LOL

I don't see a problem on a normal DD that doesn't see abuse and is pretty much stock.

How I drive my cars though, with the mods they have, I wouldn't feel comfortable with anything longer than 5K miles or so.... Which is a several months, sometimes a years time.

A few years back, I was commuting such a long distance with the '02 that 5k miles would have been every ~3 months!

With all that highway driving and a stock engine, I really wasn't surprised to see such clean plugs when I pulled them at 100k.

Stuff like this is definitely user/application dependent though.

I can't imagine driving that much PERIOD! Hate it!

I guess if it was in one of the TAs I could do it.. But I would hate the wear on the car then. LOL

Well my car is my dd and I average 3k miles about every month and a half to two months depending on what all I have to do for work, drill etc. Ive had the car a lil over a year and have put roughly 25k on it, haven't done plugs or wires since buying it and don't have any issues but just figured might as well change them while I'm gonna be workin on that general area of the motor lol, who knows they may be clean as a whistle when I pull em, and as you can see from my Sig my car is pretty much stock, the lt's and duals will be my biggest mod so far. And I figured it'd be better to change then now as well since I'm do intake, tb air and egr delete around tax time next year and I'm gonna wait and get it tuned then rather than tune it now then have to tune again then so ill be running a little rich between now and then.
