In search of 4LxxE width dimensions
Hi.
My first post here. My name is Jo and I am building a Cobra replica in the UK. Originally putting an L99 with 6L80E transmission in.
We've now found that a transmission tunnel width restriction is totally preventing the use of the 6L80E - the engine would have to be moved forwards 6inches causing all sorts of problems with FEAD.
So... our next thought was to use a modified 4L65E - so allowing electronic control etc.
BUT. I cannot find the width dimensions for the transmission anywhere. It's easy to find the lengths of all the GM transmissions but not the widths.
I'm looking specifically for the maximum width across the main casing (not bell housing equivalent)
and the width across the pan (which I think is 11 or 13 inches) and importantly what depth the pan width is from top of casing.
Hopefully the attached pdf og the 6L80 dims gives an idea what I'm looking for.
The transmission tunnel in the chassis narrows at the tail end and also narrows towards the top hence the need to understand the overall shape of the 4Lxx range to see if they will fit.
Please can anyone help me on here with that. I can find the length no problem. It's the width / girth that's important here! (No funny jokes please!)

I have an empty case to measure...
In the center of the trans (front to back and up and down), it has a width of 9" and the case has a height of 8". (Add height of oil pan - about 2").
Obviously it gets tall near the front before it attaches to the bell housing.
The bottom of the case expands quickly to the 13" wde oil pan.
The front left also has the bulge for the servo; it is slightly below the center line.
At the rear edge of the oil pan, the center of the case (up/down) has tapered to 8" and the height is down to 7". (Plus the pan).
I hope that helps.
