Default Powerglide for racecars

Can anyone explain to me why powerglide, or 2 speed, transmissions are so popular in the racing world? Can you support your statement with graphs or numerical data?

this is just an assumption on my part. Because they've been around a very long time and they're simple, the rebuilders have had the time to find out what aftermarket parts will hold up to the stress of racing.

strong, lighter, less parasitic loss. plus a pretty dead first gear works good with high hp boosted cars.
